Dick Van Dyke's presence was missed at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
Though the 98-year-old was previously announced as a presenter for the event hosted by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, the Mary Poppins star was notably absent from the award ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. (See all the winners here).
He was set to join a lineup of nominees, including Selena Gomez, Maya Rudolph, Jean Smart, Lily Gladstone and Kristen Wiig, who all took to the stage to hand out a few golden statues.
The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star is a four-time winner of Primetime Emmys, three of which were for his hit show The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961 to 1966. He is also a two-time winner of Daytime Emmys, most recently winning in June for his guest appearance in Days of Our Lives and earning the title as the oldest person to ever win a Daytime Emmy.
Though he was not nominated for any Primetime awards this year, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic—a special about Van Dyke’s storied career—won an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded) during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony on Sept. 7. (Van Dyke was not listed as a producer for the special, so was not eligible to win for the category.)
After the event, the entertainment legend gave advice to young actors and shared that he hopes he’ll be remembered for "making people laugh for 75 years."
"You have to stick with it,” Van Dyke told reporters. “You're gonna go through hard times and a lot of auditions... but you have to stay with it. Be patient. It's very important to believe that you can do it."
And despite his long-lasting career, Van Dyke expressed being surprised by his success and eager to keep going.
"I don't know how I did it!" he continued. "I can't believe it, that I'm still here and performing."
Van Dyke added, "I'm looking for work if anybody has!"
