About a year ago, I ran my hand through my hair and noticed that it wasn't as thick or full as it once was. I've been trying to reverse hair thinning and promote hair growth ever since.
If you've been experiencing thinning hair or hair loss, I'm right there with you. To get some answers – and to find top hair regrowth solutions – I asked an expert.
What causes hair loss and hair thinning?
For starters, it's important to note that hair loss and hair thinning are not the same, according to trichologist Gretchen Friese.
“Hair thinning is a gradual process that can be temporary - like with postpartum or chemotherapy hair thinning,” she says. Typically, thinning hair is the result of something, like certain medication, excess stress, or products. On the other hand, “hair loss is more permanent - like when the follicle dies and the hair can’t grow back,” she explains.
Knowing whether you're experiencing hair loss or hair thinning can be helpful when it comes to selecting the best products for you.
What are the best hair loss treatments for women?
When it comes to finding the right treatment option, Friese calls out a few key ingredients to look for. She says rosemary extract, biotin, niacin, iron, zinc and collagen can all help to encourage hair growth.
“Using products that block the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can help fight androgenetic alopecia and hair loss,” our expert says.
Another option to treat hair loss is topical minoxidil, which is a medication that can help regrow hair. You may know it as the popular brand Rogaine but Virtue makes a good one, too.
In terms of a haircare routine, “it's always a good idea to keep a healthy environment for hair to grow,” our trichologist says.
To do that, she recommends washing your hair at least three times a week to help prevent build up on the scalp. And don't forget to rinse and repeat, she advises.
For the record, I started doing this a few months ago and it's made a world of a difference in my hair growth journey!
"Exfoliating the scalp will also help prevent build up of oils, products and debris,” she explains. We recommend Briogeo's scalp revival charcoal line, which you can shop below.
Finish off with a conditioner, like the E! reader-loved R+Co Biotin Thickening one, and a leave-in treatment to keep your strands strong and moisturized. Additionally, you can add in some products to promote thicker hair – my personal favorite is the density booster spray from Virtue's Flourish line.
